Doesn't anyone see that the real problem is condoning any employment situation where the individual performing the service is paid a substandard wage? Ideally, there would be no tipping, for anything. and labor laws would be ENFORCED. And then the actual price of the food would be on the menu. If you think this utopian ideal cannot be achieved, visit London.

As it is, I tip quite high, higher than all my friends. And my friends are generous. But it's a screwy system and making the consumer feel guilty is misguided.

And noone is chaining those guys to a bike either, So it must feel worth it to them. I think the guys protesting outside Saigon Grill have the right idea: go after the employer, not the customer.

Meanwhile I will keep giving ~$3 to the food delivery guy, in cash, because it's the only way I can keep his employer from stealing it from him. I guess.

"Our high-minded and cynical tipping philosophies revolve around an antiquated nostalgic view that we tip to reward good service. This is incorrect. As we all know, tipping is our way of paying for the cheap food and incredible service we have available to us nearly around the clock. That cheapness and availability comes at a cost we never see"

When you're spending a whopping $100 for dinner, I hardly think this is cheap.
I resent that there is tipping at all, as restaurant owners should pay their employees, and not expect us to pay for them, while NOT passing on the savings to us.
Oh, and another thing that annoys the HELL out of me is the ever-inflating "tip" (that has now become a "chunk").
When a "tip" of 20% is expected (excuse me- DEMANDED) we have have problems.
A tip (if there should be such a thing at all) should be just what the name says, a "tip".

Wow, this really opened up my eyes and I too, will never tip under 20% ever again for my deliveries. Thank you so much for raising awareness on this overlooked issue.

Thanks, Doug. I hope people read Jennifer's article and resolve to bring their tips up -- it's the absolute least we should be doing.
